UC-Mexicanistas is an academic association of scholars distinguished by the productivity of its members and a spirit of collaboration that has produced numerous publications and conferences focused on Mexican literature, history and culture. Initially composed of professors and former students from the University of California system, the association has expanded to include some of the best known Mexican cultural and literary studies scholars from the United States, Mexico and abroad.
UC-Mexicanistas has gained recognition as a group of outstanding researchers that, as a whole, offer an interdisciplinary focus for an already existing collaboration of scholars in the United States and Mexico, and specifically between Mexico and California. The conferences in California, Mexico (and specifically those in Mérida) are internationally recognized, as are the publications that have resulted from them. The large number of quality publications by UC-Mexicanistas includes books, anthologies, articles and reviews on history, culture, literature, film, painting, sculpture, music, and journalism. There are studies on documents from the end of the 19th and 20th centuries, and on testimonials of historical events involving the Mexican Revolution, the most important historical event of the first years of the 20th century in Mexico. There are studies on bilingual and bicultural manifestations and border literature and culture, both from the Mexican side and that of the United States. There are also studies on “northern” literature, “Mexico-Californian” literature, gender studies, street literature, counterculture, cultural studies, literature of violence, marginalized literature, folklore, popular literature, and other studies on film and literature, on Mexican film in Hollywood, and bilingual theater in California.
The studies and conferences held in Mexico and California are greatly enriched by visits from Mexican writers. There have been visits from Elena Poniatowska, Carlos Monsiváis, Sergio Pitol, José Emilio Pacheco, Margo Glantz, Ignacio Solares, Hernán Lara Zavala, Gonzalo Celorio, Eduardo Antonio Parra, David Toscana, Rosa Beltrán, Cristina Rivera Garza, Myriam Moscona, to cite only a few. Association members have also been invited to El Colegio de México, the Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara (Guadalajara International Book Fair), the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, and the Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana, among others.
Now, more than ever, the UC-Mexicanistas have achieved a greater intellectual presence within the UC system for Mexican Studies, as well as with the most relevant Mexican research and teaching institutions.
